Bangladesh Bans Opposition Leader's Foreign Medical Care

Bangladesh has prevented ailing opposition leader Khaleda Zia, a former two-time prime minister, from traveling abroad for critical medical treatment. This decision, attributed to her effective house arrest, has drawn criticism as an act of political vengeance by the government. Concerns over the political environment have been raised by Western governments and human rights organizations ahead of upcoming general elections in Bangladesh. Khaleda Zia, who has been hospitalized since August with multiple health issues, including advanced liver cirrhosis, breathing problems, and diabetes, had sought permission to seek treatment abroad, which was denied by the government citing an executive order barring her from both political activities and foreign medical care. Supporters argue that the same provision could be used to allow her treatment abroad and condemn the decision as politically motivated
